Argentinian Yerba Mate

I visited Argentina during my time in Chile and was introduced to the wonderful culture of yerba mate. If you can, I hope you will try it.

Ingredients

  • yerba mate

Instructions

  1. boil water and set aside

  2. have a pitcher of cool water handy

  3. pour mate into a calabash (gourd) until it is 2/3rds full

  4. cover opening of calabash and shake container so the yerba settles in the bottom half

  5. add cool water to saturate the leaves, leaving the top layer dry

  6. insert bombilla into the side of the calabash that had less mate

  7. pour in hot water into the side with the bombilla

  8. enjoy

Note

Some people add sugar to their yerba mate. This is done by adding sugar or sweetener to the water so it is distributed evenly.
